So, Why Is Japan So Popular to Visit at the Moment?
I must admit, Japan was never really a destination I had seriously thought about visiting until I got into travel.
Now, through friends, colleagues and people I come across through the travel industry, I constantly hear stories from people who have visited Japan and absolutely loved it. Some have even enjoyed it so much that they have gone back twice in the same year!
So, what is it about Japan that is making so many people want to visit?
I guess with travel, the world is becoming a smaller place. There are now very few places that simply can't be reached, and destinations that once seemed a million miles away are becoming increasingly accessible to us.
And Japan certainly seems to be one of those destinations that has suddenly appeared on people's travel wish lists.

📱 Social media is making us curious
I regularly stumble across videos on social media showing people's experiences in Japan.
One of the things I keep seeing is people heading into 7-Eleven for a midnight snack and, honestly, I find myself thinking that I want to experience that one day!
It might sound like a small thing, but I think that's exactly what social media has done to travel.
We aren't just seeing the big tourist attractions anymore. We're seeing the little everyday experiences too — what people eat, where they shop, how they travel around and what it's like simply walking through the streets of a Japanese city.
And suddenly, those experiences make you think:
"I'd love to do that."
🏙️ A country that seems like it's from the future
Japan has always fascinated me because of the contrast between its incredible history and its futuristic cities.
The bright neon lights, huge skyscrapers, technology and bustling streets of cities such as Tokyo seem almost futuristic, while at the same time Japan has managed to preserve centuries-old traditions, temples, shrines and cultural experiences.
Then there's the famous bullet train.
The idea of travelling across the country at incredible speeds while knowing that you're passing through landscapes, cities and areas that are completely different from one another is a huge part of the appeal.
And, of course, there's Mount Fuji.
It is one of those landmarks that you probably feel like you've already seen hundreds of times before you've ever been to Japan.
But seeing it in person must be something completely different.
Japan's technology and its ability to rebuild and recover from major events at a speed that can sometimes seem unimaginable to us in the UK is also fascinating.
There really is a feeling that Japan does things differently.
Japan is becoming incredibly popular
The visitor numbers certainly back up the growing interest.
Japan welcomed more than 42 million international visitors in 2025, setting a new record and showing just how popular the country has become with travellers from all over the world.
The weaker Japanese yen has also helped make Japan more attractive to international visitors, particularly when it comes to food, shopping and experiences.
And I think this is important.
Japan is no longer somewhere that people simply talk about visiting "one day."
For many travellers, Japan is now the holiday they are actually booking.
📸 Social media has changed the way we see destinations
Social media has completely changed the way we think about possible holiday destinations.
We're constantly being shown incredible images and videos of Japan.
Mount Fuji covered in snow.
Cherry blossoms lining the streets.
Autumn colours covering the countryside.
Neon-lit cities at night.
Traditional Geisha in their beautiful attire.
Bullet trains flying through the countryside.
And then there are the food videos!
Every time I see a top chef cooking with Wagyu beef, I immediately think of Japan.
Wagyu has become commonplace on menus around the world, but its origins are firmly rooted in Japan. Seeing the way Japanese food is prepared, presented and enjoyed is another reason the country has become such an attractive destination for food lovers.
And let's be honest — who wouldn't want to try authentic Japanese food while actually in Japan?
🌸 Japan in every season
One of the other things I really like about Japan as a holiday destination is that you aren't restricted to visiting at one particular time of year.
Each season offers something completely different.
🌸 Spring: Cherry blossom season and one of the most famous times to visit Japan.
☀️ Summer: Festivals, warmer weather and opportunities to explore Mount Fuji and the countryside.
🍁 Autumn: Incredible red, orange and golden foliage, particularly around Japan's temples, gardens and mountains.
❄️ Winter: Snow, skiing, spectacular winter scenery and the opportunity to experience traditional Japanese hot springs.
So, whether you want to see the cherry blossoms, experience the autumn colours or enjoy Japan in the snow, there is a reason to visit throughout the year.

Tokyo is probably the city that most of us immediately associate with Japan.
And for good reason.
But Japan has so many other destinations worth exploring, each offering a completely different experience.

This is perhaps one of the reasons Japan is so appealing.
You can visit once and still feel like you have only experienced a tiny part of the country.
🚢 Why not combine Japan with a cruise?
And this is where it gets really interesting for me as someone working in travel.
You don't necessarily have to choose between a traditional Japan holiday and a cruise.
Why not combine the two?
There are now cruise and stay options that allow you to experience Japan both on land and at sea.
Imagine flying from the UK and spending a few nights exploring Tokyo before travelling by bullet train to Kyoto.
Spend time discovering the temples, traditional streets and culture of Kyoto before continuing your journey to the coast and boarding a cruise ship.
From there, you could visit destinations such as Osaka, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Kochi, Toba and Shimizu, with some itineraries also including a visit to South Korea.
It gives you the opportunity to explore Japan properly before enjoying the more relaxing side of cruising.
You unpack once, settle into your cabin and let the ship take you from one destination to the next.
Land, rail and sea — all in one holiday.
And for me, that sounds like a pretty fantastic way to experience Japan.
So, is Japan worth visiting?
Yes, definitely!
Japan combines culture, food, history, technology, scenery and adventure in a way that very few destinations can.
It can be exciting, peaceful, futuristic, traditional and completely different — sometimes all within the same day.
And perhaps most importantly, it is a destination where you can visit once and still feel like you've only scratched the surface.
Maybe that's why so many people I speak to who have visited Japan are already planning their next trip.
And who knows?
Perhaps one day I'll be the person walking into a Japanese 7-Eleven at midnight looking for that late-night snack!
